"I don't understand," Princess Claira began, her thoughts and words clouded in confusion. "Why kidnap me if you're not planning on eating me?"
A wispy puff of ash grey smoke spiraled from the ruby red dragon's nostrils.
"My intention was never to kidnap you, I was merely removing you from the dangerous situation you were already in." The dragon spoke cooly and calmly, like the smoothness of a brook brushing over stones.
"What's more dangerous than being kidnapped by a dragon?" Claira snapped, growing annoyed with the great wise creature.
"I overheard Sir William plotting to capture you this very night and hold you for ransom." The dragon's peaceful tone began to increase with irritation at the lack of the princess's gratitude. "You know I am a good friend with your father, the king. Why would I do anything to put any of us in danger?" The dragon's flow of words began to settle back into a steady stream, and a content bellow of smoke rose from the end of its scaly red nose. "As soon as I heard the news, I knew there would be no time to warn the king. And I didn't know which guards to warn because I was unaware of who was in on the plan. I simply plucked you from the castle and out of harms way. You should be safe here, in my cave for the night. You can't be kidnapped if the kidnappers can't find you." The wise creature let out a chuckle and a snort that came out in short rapid puff.
