Example: The Play
3:17 PM
“All right everyone, we have a lot to do before the play.” Carol said. As the stage manager it was her job to get ready for opening night, but so many things could go wrong between now and curtain call. I hope no one forgets their lines. She thought, taking in a small breath and slowly exhaling, gripping her clip board. Everything will be fine.
4:05 PM
“Carol, the costumes are a mess!” Terra called, “The dressing rooms are in terrible condition.” Following Terra, Carol was in shock. It would take everyone to get the costumes together again, “Call everyone in here.” She said. It took about a half hour to get the costumes together and another ten minutes for the dressing rooms. Its ok Carol thought to herself everything is fine.
4:47 PM
Sitting in the theater listening to the actors, Carol scribbled notes on her clip board, when she heard something break, “What was that?” she shouted, “One of the lights just broke.” Someone said. Running to the back, the light manager also said, “And we can’t get two of the lights working.” Shocked, she sucked in a breath, it’s ok, we don’t need those lights, it’s fine.
5:23 PM
Looking over the props needed for every scene, Carol noticed that a major prop was missing. Fear gripped her stomach. So much was happening. It’s opening night and we don’t have any apples for Snow White. Taking in deep breaths, Carol sent someone to the store for a bushel of apples. Sitting down to keep her head from spinning she thought, this can’t be happening.
5:47 PM
Sitting in the far back row of seats, Carol called to the front, “Where’s Cleo?” one of the seven dwarves responded “She went home sick in first block today.” “Why wasn’t I informed of this earlier? This is opening night people!” she shouted in frustration, taking in many rapid deep breaths she thought. This is a night mare, this isn’t fine, and this isn’t good.
5:52 PM
They were finally getting some progress done after Tanya the understudy stepped in. Carol was able to relax a little knowing nothing could happen now, until the actress ran off the stage puking. “What happened?” Carol asked climbing onto the stage, “She had a taco for lunch, from the lunch room.” Someone said, “And you didn’t stop her?” There is no way this is happening.
6:08 PM
Being the only other person who knows all the lines of the Evil Queen, Carol went into makeup to get ready. “Carol, we have another problem,” someone said while she was getting her hair done. “What now?” she asked. “The microphones are making a weird sound.” Sighing, she got up. A high ring was happening every time someone spoke. Moving some knobs, the sound stopped.
6:56 PM
While making some adjustments to the Queen’s dress, one of the town’s people came in, “Uh…Carol, we have people lining up to buy tickets and be seated.” “Where are the sales people?” she asked, “No one knows, they haven’t been seen for two hours.” “OK put the seven dwarves on sales and seating” she said, sighing she thought to herself, this is so not fine.
7:07 PM
Going through the action scene one more time, one of the animals tripped and fell, fed up, the director stormed out of the theater. “What now?” someone asked, everyone looked at Carol “The play will go on, we have the play down we don’t need a director. Turning away from everyone Carol took in a very deep breath and exhaled. It’s going to be fine.
7:14 PM
“OK everyone let’s get into place! We have sixteen minutes.” Carol shouted, everyone hurried to their places, finally able to relax Carol calmed down, until…RIP… looking towards the sound, Snow White’s dress had a big hole in the back, this can’t be happening. Thinking on her feet, Carol quickly placed extra cloth on the hole and pinned it together. Everything is going to be fine.
7:30 PM
As the first curtain rose the crowd clapped as Carol walked out on stage with a cloak covering her costume, “Thank you all for coming tonight, we hope you enjoy tonight’s performance of Snow White” As the second curtain rose, and the play began, Carol took many deep breaths as her part inched closer. Everything’s fine, I can do this. And she went on stage.
